Natural Home Remedies For Ear Infection

Ear pain can be sharp and piercing. There are many possible causes of ear infection. Sinus infections, cavities, tonsillitis, earwax are some prominent ones. The most common ear infection is a middle ear infection or acute otitis media. Here, the middle ear may be inflamed or swollen or due to the infection, and the pain is caused by the fluid being stuck behind the eardrum.

Ear pain can be followed by other symptoms like fever, slight hearing loss, or flu. Ear infections are quite common among children.

The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) suggests that in the case of ear problems, pain management should be the priority and not the use of antibiotics. This is because the overuse of antibiotics can often lead to antibiotic-resistant infections. The great news is that you can find most of the things that can give you relief in your kitchen pantry or at home. There are many home remedies for ear infection that are safe to try.

Here are home remedies for an ear infection that work.

1. Steam – Does your little kid have an ear infection that's making them finicky? They may not sit long enough for a warm compress to have an impact. Steam through a shower, humidifier, or bath can have a similar effect as a warm compress. It helps to relax and open airways, thus easing pain and reducing ear pressure.

2. Sleeping Upright – Ear discomfort through viral infections is primarily the result of fluid buildup in your middle ear. Draining this fluid can help to relieve pain. Rather than lying down, try sleeping in an upright position, either in an armchair that's reclined or a bit propped up with a couple of pillows.

3. Gargling with Saltwater – An earache is often linked with a sore throat, and rinsing with salt water can help ease your symptoms. Use a 1: 5 ratio of salt to warm water, then rinse, spit out, and repeat it. When afflicted with a sore throat, warm liquids like broth soup, honey, and lemon tea or a  can provide relief.  Do this up to 4 times every day.

4. Essential Oils – Most essential oils have antibacterial or antiviral properties that aid in preventing viruses from reproducing or kill bacteria. Oregano oil, tea tree oil, basil oil, and garlic oil, in particular, are known to alleviate ear pain. Try mixing a couple of drops of olive oil with a couple of drops of essential oil and place them directly into the ear. You can also dip a cotton ball in essential oil and dab it on the ear opening to let the essential oil drain in.

5. Onions– For eons, mothers have sworn by the healing power of onions. While there is no proven evidence behind their effectiveness, onions do contain chemicals, like flavonoid quercetin, that have anti-inflammatory properties that can help ease ear swelling. To heal an earache, place a couple of drops of onion juice in the infected ear or half sliced onion on top of the infected ear.

6. Hydrogen  Peroxide Mixture – Enjoying at the swimming pool in the summer can help to cool down, but too much time in the water can result in a "swimmer's ear." To drain out water trapped in the ear, you can make hydrogen peroxide earache drops from a 1 to 1 ratio of peroxide to water and use a dropper to put the liquid into your ear. Combining equal parts, rubbing alcohol and vinegar,   can have a similar effect. Both combinations help provide earache relief by drying out the ear and draining of excess moisture.

7.  Chewing Gum– If you've just been scuba diving or on a plane, you may experience ear pain from changes in air pressure. Chewing gum can aid to "pop" your ears and help to minimize any discomfort or stress you're experiencing.

8. Garlic -Garlic is a go-to  remedy for earache that has been used for centuries. The Allicin compound in garlic is said to be effective in fighting bacterial infections that cause an earache. Eating raw garlic is believed to help relieve ear pain.

9. Ginger - Ginger is loaded with anti-inflammatory properties. Applying ginger juice  (which is shredded, strained in warmed olive oil)  around the outer ear canal can reduce pain. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties. Never put ginger directly into the ear.

10. Distraction -One of the most excellent methods for minimizing the feeling of pain, mainly among kids, is to distract the mind from the earache, television, games, or exercise that can help reduce attention to earache.

11. Ice pack -Holding a damp washcloth or an ice pack or cold to the ear for 20 minutes may help numb ear pain and reduce any potential inflammation that is causing it.

12. Apple Cider Vinegar -ACV (Apple cider vinegar) alters the pH of the ear canal and develops an atmosphere where viruses and bacteria cannot live. Warm some vinegar and use it on the infected ear with a cotton bud. Let the vinegar drip into the ear.  Use organic apple cider vinegar to avoid adulterants or chemicals.
