How to Successfully Navigate A Career Switch - 5 Ways

No comments:
Whether you’ve decided to change careers, are planning to leave your job, or have recently been let go from your stable job, navigating career transitions can often leave you in uncertain territory. Unfortunately, I’ve witnessed many panic attacks about it in my career coaching practice!

While a career change can feel like a daunting blank slate, the alternative is worse: staying stuck in a job you don’t love. Perhaps you know this, and you’re ready to take the leap! And if you’re anything like me, you’re wondering… Will the net even appear?!

Let’s face it… Transitions are never easy regardless of the circumstance. If you’re currently navigating a career transition, I have 5 essentials that can help you navigate the storm.

1. Accept What Is. Trust that the transition is for your highest good! When you come into acceptance with what IS and you don’t take it personally, you can start to focus on your new path ahead. I always tell clients: move towards a future that is bigger than your past. And know that with 71% of the workforce job hunting, it’s fair to say that people aren’t happy in their careers. That’s why it’s 100% okay to want to make a change; trust me, it’s far better to be in tune with what you’re feeling than to pretend you’re truly happy. Life’s too short to spend every week counting down to the weekend. Trust that little voice inside of you.

2. Invest In You. Hopelessness comes from not knowing a set of steps to take next. That’s why it’s so important that regardless of the nature of your career transition, investing in your growth and education is always a good move. Curious about design? Looking to start your own business? There are plenty of affordable online courses , books, and seminars that are just what you need to spark the motivation and enthusiasm that you need to launch into the next phase of your life. Plus, you can list your courses on your resume and/or Linkedin profile under the “Education” section!

3. Know Your Core Values. This means really tapping into what’s fundamentally important to you in life. Is it family? Freedom? Creativity? Pick five and know that your career satisfaction is riding on them… Because core values are the key ingredients to a happy career. If freedom or family is a core value of yours, consider remote work opportunities. If creativity is a core value of yours, really check in with yourself as you apply for those roles that are analytical.

4. Take A Breather. Sometimes it’s best to slow down in order to speed up. Sound confusing? I get it. But here’s the deal: you truly cannot hear yourself the gift of clarity when you’re allowing your mind to become noisy with questions and in desperation for answers. Space heals. Chances are you’ve been working for years and are in need of some time to just relax and decompress. Sleep in, go out in nature, reconnect with friends and family, or take a weekend getaway. Just breathe and be open. Like they say in personal development—go be a human being, rather than a human “doing.”

5. Be All In! Now it’s time to focus. You’ve made your lists, updated the resume (or started your business plan!), and now it’s time to put all your energy into making a better future for yourself. If you want brownie points for your productivity, write a long list out of your to do’s (get granular), get a physical planner book, and input each task as realistic blocks of time… I’m a huge fan of calendaring all of your steps. This sort of discipline is ironically the key to all freedom. By inputting your steps on the calendar, you guarantee yourself that you are honoring your goals, and you’re no longer imprisoned by being someone you don’t want to be.

Life may have its up’s and down’s… But you’re in charge. Know that and trust yourself. Give yourself space for some clarity, discover your core values, invest in your education, and play big with your goals.

If not you, who? You deserve success now… Not someday, somewhere, “out there.”

You’ve got this.
