New Technology of Water Cleaning By Sun Light

High-energy costs are one of the main drawbacks in the process of getting clean water out of industrial waste. In accordance with information given by an article in Biomicrofluidics magazine, which was published by American Institute of Physics, a new system, which combines two different kinds of technologies, for the purpose of the pollutant substances removal process, is based on using a cheap possible energy source namely sunlight. Microfluidics, Moving water through small channels, and photocatalysis, using light for full destroying of all the dirt in this water, are lumped into one science called optofluidics.

«These two technologies were worked up parallelly, however, there are affords required to apply natural synergy between them», says the main author of the research Xuming Zhang from Hong Kong Polytechnic University. «Our results showed substantial improvements in the effectiveness of photocatalysts».

Research workers made a planar microfluidic reactor, or microreactor, which, in point of fact, represents a right-angled room, made of two glass plates covered with titanic dioxide, an active component, used in many lotions and sun-protection creams. In broad daylight, the cover turns electrons out, which are reactive with polluting matters in water; as a result, they gravitate to the bottom as non-hazardous substances. It is photocatalysis, a part of the process. A high surface region of a reactor raises a capability of the catalyzer for capturing sunlight. Even though a plate gap is not big, Zhang plans to widen square measures up to two square meters. «Our current small-scale proves a concept, however, we also increase the reactor proportionally in relation to productivity equal to 1000 litres per 1 hour», the researcher added. If the big reactor proves its efficiency soon, it will be possible to use many parallel devices, for managing industry applications for water processing and cleaning.
